Our education approach

A practical, learner-centred approach that connects knowledge, making, reflection and action — and is explicit about what it fixes and what it leaves open.

Core definitions

Four distinctions give the whole system a common language for how learning and assessment are structured. They do not cover everything — safety, inclusion, community accountability and what is actually running are separate questions, addressed on their own pages.

Stage is purpose

Explorer, Maker, Innovator and Changemaker describe what the making is for. Stages are named, never numbered, and never graded against one another.

Level is programme depth

A level describes capability within one subject and attaches to a programme, not to a person — see where depth lives.

Making has no prescribed loop

A learner may begin from an aim, a material, an idea, a sound, a question or an accident. No single making sequence is imposed. A facilitator may teach or demonstrate a process where it helps — but following that process is not what is assessed.

Completion has a fixed standard

Assessed work must contain all six Definition of Done evidence states — in any order. This is the one thing that does not flex.

What is fluid, and what is fixed

Keeping these apart is the central design decision. It lets different subjects work in the ways that suit them — a cycle that opens with “identify a problem” is engineering-shaped and fits music and much of design badly — while holding assessed work to one comparable standard.

The six states are evidence categories, not steps. They may appear in any order, repeat or overlap, and the standard itself is never published, taught or drawn as a cycle — that is the one presentation this rules out, because a loop implies an order the standard does not require. A facilitator may still walk a group through one possible way of working; what is assessed is that all six are present, not the route taken. Full detail: assessment.

One further boundary matters. Explorer work is exempt from assessment by definition — it runs as open, curiosity-led tinkering rather than against a set task[5]. Unassessed is not unguided. Facilitators keep the work safe, make tools and possibilities visible, answer questions and give feedback when a learner wants or needs it; none of that counts toward certification. The Definition of Done applies exactly where certification applies, from the Maker stage upward. Assessing exploration is how you stop people exploring.

Placement is based on demonstrated prerequisites

Every programme provides a recommended route, so a beginner always knows where they are. That route is a recommendation, not a queue.

  • Where a programme allows direct entry, a learner demonstrates the prerequisites through a placement check rather than repeating learning they already hold.
  • Prior learning counts regardless of where it was acquired — at school, at work, online, or from a relative who repairs things.
  • Time enrolled does not by itself move anyone forward. Progression rests on demonstrated capability, completed work and the prerequisites of what comes next.
  • Eligibility for a stage transition is condition-based, not time-served. When someone actually starts still depends on programme dates, available places and supervision.

The placement check exists to reduce reliance on indirect proxies — age, school year, prior enrolment — by asking a learner to demonstrate the prerequisites that can be assessed directly. It does not capture everything: confidence, communication and access needs, recent practice and the support someone will want are considered alongside it, not inside it. It matters most where the content genuinely depends on a prior concept — the research on how people acquire economic ideas, for instance, shows that understanding profit rests on first grasping price comparison[45], and that saving and selling are accessible far earlier[43]. Those studies report their findings by age because they studied school cohorts. What they identify is a prerequisite, and we test for the prerequisite.

Access and inclusion

Two commitments, both of which cost something and are held anyway.

Age does not determine placement

Age is not used as an entry rule, a band, a level label, or a published “typical age”. Where a learner starts is decided by what they can demonstrate. Age-related information is still used for the things it genuinely governs — safeguarding, legal duty of care and supervision — and a programme may carry practical participation requirements. A published typical age tends to be read as a rule by exactly the people we are trying not to turn away.

Agency transfers to the learner

Participation and belonging in making environments improve when learners hold genuine decisions and when non-traditional ways of knowing are valued[27]. That is a design instruction, not a sentiment: it means real choices inside the work and a range of ways in. It does not mean the learner must supply the starting point — a project may begin with a facilitator, a community, a partner or a brief, provided the learner has genuine room to interpret and shape what happens next.

There is also a plain material dimension. In Sri Lanka, national statistics record computer literacy at 19.1% nationally, with the Eastern Province at 10.7% against 31.4% in the Western Province[58]. Provision that assumes a learner arrives with a computer at home is provision that quietly selects for the learners who least need it. International guidance reaches the same conclusion — technology in education has to be judged on whose terms it is introduced[52].

Published foundations

The approach is assembled from established traditions rather than invented, and it is worth being specific about which idea comes from where.

A note on terminology, because it causes real confusion: in this system PBL means project-based learning. Problem-based learning is a separate and well-established tradition with a different history and structure[16] — this model does not build on it, which is a choice about our own design rather than a judgement on the method. Where it comes up it is written out in full, because the abbreviation is not shared.

The strongest objection to this approach

Any education system that leans on discovery and open-ended projects has to answer a serious, well-argued challenge: that minimal guidance during instruction does not work, particularly for novices, and that problem-solving as a teaching method succeeds only once learners already have enough knowledge to solve problems[17].

We think that critique is largely correct, and the system is built to accommodate it rather than to dismiss it.

  • Guidance is highest where knowledge is lowest. Explorer work is facilitated tinkering rather than unsupported discovery. In the Maker stage, taught content and defined briefs establish capability early, and the learner takes more responsibility for defining and directing the work as that capability grows — the exit condition is a project they chose and carried themselves.
  • The solution space widens as scaffolding decreases, and only in that order — the pattern described in maker and technology education research, where a first workshop is narrowly defined and later ones give a bigger solution space with less support[15].
  • Structured teaching is a first-class delivery mode, not a fallback. See facilitation.
  • Open-endedness is present at every stage; what changes is the stakes and the support. Explorer work is open and low-stakes; Maker work pairs taught capability with widening choice; Innovator and Changemaker work carry that capability into problems and commitments beyond the exercise. What is held back for the later stages is not openness but consequence.

The disagreement in the literature is not really “discovery versus instruction”. It is about when. Our answer is that the amount of guidance should track the learner’s existing knowledge — which is also why placement measures that knowledge directly.
