The learning journey

A progression from exploration to community contribution, with subject capability tracked separately — and an honest account of what happens at each end of it.

Purpose and proficiency are different questions

The journey answers two questions that most learning ladders weld together. Stage describes what a learner is trying to accomplish: explore, make, innovate or contribute. Programme level describes the depth of capability required within one subject, such as robotics, digital education or music.

Keeping them separate is what lets an experienced software learner begin electronics at the foundation without being treated as a beginner in every sense — and lets a fifteen-year-old with a working prototype be recognised for it without the system having to decide whether that is age-appropriate.

A Changemaker’s documentation is not better than a Maker’s. It is documentation for a different purpose. Stages are therefore never compared on a competency grid; levels within a subject are.

Four purposes

The stages describe a widening purpose. They are not grades, age groups, cohorts or fixed personality labels.

The learning that happens inside each stage is also different in kind. Explorer work is about possibility and belonging. Maker work builds a repertoire. Innovator work applies that capability to a problem still unresolved in its own context — which may mean adapting a known solution to a different language, material, price or setting — and that is the point at which challenge-based approaches become appropriate rather than premature[12, 14].

The Changemaker gate is a specific thing

Becoming a Changemaker is not a matter of time served, enthusiasm, or finishing a programme. It requires having produced a grassroots innovation, which has three tests and passes only when all three hold.

  • The problem is real and locally grounded — people affected by it recognise it as an existing problem. A learner, facilitator, mentor or partner may be the one who brings it forward; what fails the test is a problem that exists only because the exercise needed one, such as a competition brief written to be built against.
  • An intended user outside the space has tested it — someone the work is actually for has handled it, not only seen it demonstrated or exhibited.
  • Someone depends on the outcome — the work has a stake beyond the demonstration.

The term is borrowed carefully. Grassroots innovation has an established research literature describing innovation driven by social need rather than profit and rooted in the community that experiences the problem[46], and a South Asian strand documenting innovation by knowledge-rich, economically poor people — including empathetic innovators who did not personally suffer the problem they solved[47]. Makerspaces are a recognised category within that literature, so this is not a stretched use of the term.

The empathetic case matters in practice: a learner need not have lived the problem, but must have taken it from someone who did — which is what the first test checks. Who pointed the learner at it is not the test. A mentor, a facilitator or a visiting specialist naming a real community problem is ordinary here, and is how most of this work starts; what the test rejects is a problem invented for the exercise. Depth belongs to a programme

Each programme publishes its own capability thresholds, prerequisites, learning outcomes and assessed projects. The number of levels is determined by what genuinely must be learned; it is not forced into a universal ladder.

The distinction in one example

“Robotics Systems — Level 3” describes completion within a named programme. It does not describe a learner’s general ability, and there is no equivalent figure for a whole person: people hold different depths in different subjects, and one number discards that.

Levels exist only inside the Maker stage. There are none at Explorer, because nothing there counts toward certification or a level — facilitators still watch the work and give feedback — and none above Maker, because at that point the useful question stops being “how deep” and becomes “did it work, for whom”. Milestones, not levels, in the top two stages

Progress inside the Innovator and Changemaker stages is marked by named milestones on the learner’s profile. Each is recorded against a published condition — whether it holds is judged — but a milestone is never turned into a numbered level or combined with others into a grade.

  2. First user feedback — an intended user or affected person has responded to it, rather than a peer reviewing it as coursework
  3. Response tested in context — with intended users, affected people, or a suitable representative where direct testing is limited by safety or access, and the limitation recorded

Changemaker milestones

  3. Measured impact — beyond the learning space
Not everyone crosses into the last stage, by design

A technically excellent build with no community origin and no outside user leaves its maker an Innovator — a complete destination, not a stalled one. An education system that treats its top stage as the only real one ends up pretending that everybody reached it.

A clear route with room for prior learning

Every programme provides a recommended order. Learners who already have relevant capability may take a placement check and enter at the appropriate point. Progress depends on demonstrated prerequisites and completed work, not time served.

This has a consequence worth stating plainly: progression rates are an observation, not an expectation. We record how many learners move from Explorer to Maker, and from Maker to Innovator, because it tells us something useful about our own delivery. It is not a claim that learners are supposed to travel the whole ladder in order, and a learner who stops at a stage that suits them has not failed anything.

The maker profile

A maker profile brings completed programmes, demonstrated capabilities and recorded milestones together over time, held per subject.

Four facts about one learner, each independently useful. They are reported separately rather than combined into a single grade.

The profile is also the unit of longitudinal record. It is what makes it possible to ask, two years later, what a learner actually went on to do — and to ask it of everyone who entered, not only of those who finished.

Leaving, returning, and where the journey leads

At the point where a learner stops being inside the journey, they choose a route. The documented ones are:

Impact venture

Into the venture pathway, building something that sustains itself.

Research or academia

Further study, research placements, university.

Activism & community leadership

Organising, advocacy, leading in an existing institution.

Employment or freelancing

A job, or independent work built on the capability.

Staying to build

Working for DreamSpace Academy itself — for a period, which is not the same as forever.

Leaving

People stop. It happens at every stage and every depth, and it is the least understood thing in the system.

Three rules about that list

They are examples, not a closed set. Learners take routes we did not anticipate, and the record keeps an other category rather than forcing a fit.

Routes overlap and recur, so any percentage breakdown has to state its denominator and let one person appear in more than one route. A clean partition adding to 100% would misrepresent what actually happens.

Leaving early is one of them. It happens at every stage and every depth, and it is the least understood thing in the system. Feedback from people who stopped attending matters particularly, because feedback gathered only from those who completed cannot show why anyone left. Every stage records leavers and their reasons.

Re-entry is normal and expected. Learners leave for a season, a job, an exam year or a family reason, and come back. The record is built to hold that as a pattern rather than to treat each return as a fresh start.

Why age does not determine placement

Age is not used to decide where a learner starts or what they are ready for — not as an entry rule, not as a band, not as a level label, and not as a “typical age” printed on a brochure. Where a learner begins is decided by what they can demonstrate. Age-related information is still used for what it genuinely governs: safeguarding, legal duty of care, supervision, and any practical participation requirement a particular activity carries.

This reversed an earlier design that banded stages by age, and it was reversed for a practical reason as much as a principled one: a typical age printed anywhere is read as a rule by exactly the people this system is trying not to turn away — the adult returning to learn, the young person who is ready early, the parent wondering whether the space is for their family.
