What the MakerSpace is

MakerSpace by DreamSpace Academy is a community-rooted makerspace and digital-education hub where people learn, make, solve and earn. It is designed to be replicable, so that the same offer can run in rural and underserved communities under a shared quality framework.

It is one physical space carrying two things at once: an education offer — the structured domains and the journey through them — and an innovation offer, where people work on real local problems using the same rooms, the same equipment and the same people. Those two are not separate departments. Sharing a floor is the point.

A makerspace is defined by the blend of disciplines it holds together and by the maker mindset it builds — not by the machines it owns[2]. A modest rural unit that gets the culture right is a real makerspace. A well-equipped room where nobody makes anything is not.

The space is not defined by age. A twelve-year-old on their first project and an adult returning to retrain use the same space, the same standard and the same placement process. Where someone starts is decided by what they can already demonstrate.

The positioning, and the four words that carry it

Stated academically, the MakerSpace is a maker-based innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem: a community ecosystem that moves people from making, to innovation, to entrepreneurship — grounded in the maker movement and constructionism, and delivered through project-based and challenge-based learning.

Each of the four words is load-bearing.

Why “ecosystem” is the keyword

Results, people and reputation flow back in — which is what makes it an ecosystem rather than a course with a start and an end.
The three capabilities are sequential in a single person’s work but not in the institution’s: at any moment the space holds beginners, innovators and founders at once, and each is a resource for the others.

The distinction is practical, not decorative. A programme has a cohort, a syllabus, a completion date and an alumni list. An ecosystem has returning people, overlapping roles and results that arrive years later through routes nobody planned. The literature on entrepreneurial ecosystems is consistent that what produces entrepreneurial activity is the surrounding conditions — networks, finance, mentors, culture — rather than any single intervention delivered into a vacuum[34, 35].

That is why the MakerSpace invests in the things a course would treat as overhead: open making time that nobody assesses, alumni who come back as facilitators, a room where the person on their first soldering iron can see somebody testing a product. Peer support has been found to outperform structured teaching in the later, build-and-scale phases of maker programmes[26] — which is an argument for protecting unstructured time rather than filling it.

The gap it answers

Sri Lanka’s published national statistics describe a specific problem, and it is worth being precise about which one — because the obvious framing is not the one the evidence supports.

The third figure is the sharpest argument for a shared physical facility, and it is the one most often missed. Access to the internet is not the binding constraint it once was. But you cannot learn computer-aided design on a phone. You cannot run a laser cutter, wire a sensor board, record a multi-track session or debug a full-stack application on a phone. Where almost all connectivity is mobile, the missing thing is not a signal — it is a bench, a machine and someone who knows how to use them.

On employment, the picture is more specific than a general shortage of work. Youth unemployment nationally stood at 23.0% in 2023 — roughly five times the all-ages rate — and 58.0% of employment was informal[57]. But the same survey records the Northern Province with the lowest provincial youth unemployment in the country, at 14.9%, against 34.4% in Uva and 33.3% in the South. The problem in the east and north is therefore not a simple shortage of jobs. It is a mismatch between what education certifies and what work requires, sitting on top of a stark gap in access to the tools that modern work is done with.

Two further pieces of national context sit behind the model without being quoted as headlines. Multidimensional vulnerability profiling records the northern district of Mullaitivu as the country’s most vulnerable, at 72.4% in 2022–23[59] — a reminder that the north and east carry deprivations that an employment rate alone does not capture. And the whole picture sits on a macroeconomic recovery from a severe national crisis, which is the backdrop against which any claim about livelihoods in this period has to be read[60].

One thing that measure is not

Multidimensional vulnerability and multidimensional poverty are different instruments, measured in different years against different constructs. They must not be shown in sequence as though they were a trend — a reader given both will infer a change over time that neither instrument measured.

The case we make, and the one we do not

We do not claim the highest youth unemployment in the country, because the national survey does not support that for this region. The argument rests on what the data does show: a large gap in access to the tools modern work requires, and a mismatch between what education certifies and what employers need. Both are directly addressed by what a makerspace is.

How the parts connect

The model has four moving parts, and they sit in a fixed relationship.

  1. Maker education — the four named stages of the Maker Journey, open to anyone, running across current portfolio of domains and held to one completion standard.
  2. An open outcome field — where the Maker Journey ends, people go on to a venture, to research, to activism and community leadership, to employment or freelancing, to working inside DreamSpace Academy itself, or somewhere we have not catalogued. These are examples, not a closed list, and no total is published for them.
  3. The venture pathway — for those, and only those, who choose the venture route: the DreamSpace Lifecycle, three stages with a challenge-based learning thread and four support modes.
  4. Impact — the ventures, services and solved problems that result, reported against the results hierarchy and mapped to the Sustainable Development Goals at target level[61].
A design decision worth naming

Not everything funnels toward founding a company. There is good experimental evidence that pushing marginal participants into venturing can lower their income and employment outcomes[41]. Someone who finishes the Maker Journey with real capability and takes a job is a success of this model, not a leak from it.

What it is not

Not a tuition centre

Nothing here is graded against a national examination. Work is assessed against what was made, explained and improved.

Not an equipment room

Tools without facilitation, a community and a standard produce a storage problem. The equipment is the cheapest part of the model.

Not age-banded

There are no age groups, no age-gated levels, and no published typical age. Placement is by demonstrated capability.

Not a linear programme

People enter part-way, leave, return, and take routes we did not design. The model is built to record that rather than to deny it.
