Why the music room is next to the electronics bench

Multidisciplinary is not a nice-to-have in a makerspace. It is the definition, and it does three specific jobs that a single-subject programme cannot.

It is the definition, not an extra

When makerspaces are described in funding documents, the arts usually appear near the end as enrichment — the part that makes the technical work friendlier. That inverts the actual definition.

Dale Dougherty’s framing of a makerspace is a physical mash-up integrating the workshop, home economics, art and science[2]. The cross-disciplinary character is the first thing in the definition, not the last. Accounts of the maker movement in education describe the same thing: a set of practices that cut across subject boundaries rather than sitting inside one[3].

So when this model puts several domains on one floor — electronics, digital, AI, software, art and music, media, and physical activity — it is not being generous. It is being literal.

Three jobs it does

1. Real problems are not single-subject

Take an actual example shape: a device that helps a small-scale fisher. It needs a sensor circuit, a waterproof enclosure that has to be designed and printed, firmware, a price somebody will pay, and a two-minute video that explains it in the language of the people who would use it. Five domains, one problem.

Challenge-based learning starts from a real situation rather than a subject syllabus[12]. That is only workable if the situation is allowed to demand whatever it demands. A single-subject space forces every challenge through one discipline, which is a good way to produce projects that satisfy the curriculum and nobody else.

2. People arrive through different doors

Someone who would never enrol in a robotics course will come in to record a song. Once they are in the building, the whole space is available to them, and the person on the mixing desk can see the person at the soldering bench. The music room is not a diversion from the technical mission; it is one of its widest entrances.

This matters most for exactly the people a technical programme is least likely to reach. Research on inclusion in making environments finds that participation improves when agency transfers to participants and when non-traditional ways of knowing are valued[27] — which, concretely, means having something in the building that is not engineering.

3. Capability transfers sideways

What actually transfers between domains is not content. It is the working method: try several options before committing, test it against what you meant, show it to someone, change it. That is the same loop in a mixing session and in a prototype iteration, and it is why the completion standard is written to apply to both without distortion.

There is a related reason for the arts specifically. A structured conversation in which a learner explains how and why their work works is the strongest available evidence of genuine understanding, and it works identically for a robot, a song and a painting. Digital work is much easier to assess automatically than craft work is; the talk-through is what stops that asymmetry from quietly turning into a hierarchy of subjects.

What it costs, honestly

Multidisciplinary breadth is not free, and the costs are worth naming because they are the reason most programmes do not do it.

Facilitation is harder

One person cannot competently facilitate every domain. It requires rotation, visiting specialists, and accepting that the facilitator is often not the most expert person in the room.

Some domains are further along than others

Several of the currently documented domains have deep source curricula. The creative arts have real, continuous delivery but no published progression. Physical activity has almost none. We publish that table rather than smoothing it.

It resists a single number

You cannot report “average level achieved” across unrelated domains without producing a meaningless figure. The reporting has to be per domain, which is more work.

It needs more than one outcome measure

Work across robotics, music and sport cannot be represented responsibly by a single subject count, so it takes several measures to report — and the reason for the breadth has to be stated rather than assumed.

The record it requires

Breadth forces a specific design decision about how people are described. If depth is per domain, then a person cannot have one level — they have a profile.

This is why the model insists that levels attach to programmes rather than to people, and why a maker profile is the unit of record. It is a direct consequence of taking the multidisciplinary definition seriously rather than decoratively.
